Oakton Owls December Weekend Basketball Recap

Michael Wetoska, Athletics Writer

Men’s Basketball:

The Owls hosted and defeated the Kishwaukee Kougars on December 1st, coming away with a 91-83 victory. The first half of the game was driven by each teams’ defense, as neither Oakton or Kishwaukee was able to score 40 points by the end of the half.

Fortunately, fairly low scoring first half gave way to a much more offensively driven second half, in which the Owls put up 57 points. Sophomore guard, Jordan Irving, led the team in scoring with a whopping 40 points, followed by Pat Hamilton and Jalen McLachlan, who finished the game with 22 points and 11 points, respectively.

With the victory, the Owls move to 6-4, which puts them in third place for the division. Oakton hit the road last week to take on Wilbur Wright College on Thursday, December 6th. Looking further ahead, Oakton will have a long break before taking on Black Hawk College-Moline on December 18th.

Women’s Basketball:

The Owls dropped their fourth straight game this past December 1st, as they were defeated by Kishwaukee in a close 58-49 showdown. Oakton opened up the game with a strong first quarter, but they were only able to accumulate 14 points in the second and third quarter combined.

Unfortunately, their lack of scoring in those 20 minutes of play hindered their chances for a better end result. All things considered, the Owls did have some extremely solid performances on the court Saturday evening.

Sophomore forward, Elizabeth Strangel, left everything on the court, as she had a double-double performance with 15 points and an unbelievable 26 rebounds.

Other scoring leaders on the team included Angelina Apostolou, who also had 15 points, and Medina Skenderi, who finished with 12 points.

With the loss, the Owls move to 3-5 on the year, but they have a chance to immediately bounce back December 6th  with their home matchup against Olive-Harvey College.
